What is SEO?

When we first meet with a business, they often are new to SEO. So don’t worry if you find yourself wondering what it’s all about. You’re not alone. Here’s a quick rundown of what SEO is and why your business may need it:

SEO stands for search engine optimization. In a nutshell, it means getting your website to rank at the top of Google. Google has become a cornerstone of modern life. It processes 3.5 billion searches each day! There is a good chance that some of those searches are made by your very own customers and prospects. This leads us to the following question:

What are my customers searching for on Google?

To find out whether your business needs SEO (not all do), we would first do a “keyword analysis.” (Sign up for a free keyword analysis here.)

Basically, we use software packages to find out which “keywords,” or search phrases, are relevant to your business, and how often those keywords are being searched each month. Here is what that might look like:

So, for example, the keyword “dwi lawyer rochester ny” is getting 210 searches every month. This just scratches the surface of Rochester lawyer related keywords.

Once we find the best keywords for your company, it’s time to make the decision of whether SEO makes sense financially for your business.

The Pros and Cons of SEO

The real beauty of SEO is that it builds your business a powerful long-term asset. For years to come, you will have new visitors coming to your site every week, and for free! This contrasts greatly to pay per click strategies (PPC) like Facebook ads (link) or Google Adwords (link).

In addition, you will be attracting customers with a high degree of intention. Let’s say you are a dentist. Would you rather appear in the moment when your customer is actively searching for a dentist, or appear randomly on their Facebook feed? SEO lets you appear to the right people at the right time

SEO also comes with some disadvantages, however. For one, it takes a long time. It can take months or even up to a year to get to the top of page one. Ranking times depend on many factors like the difficulty of the keyword and the age of your site. So be prepared to wait for results. SEO also relies on finding relevant keywords. Without knowing the right keywords, you cannot reach the right customers.

6 Tips For Search Engine Optimization

-Build Social Media Profiles

These links won’t do much on their own, but when added together, they will definitely make a difference. These are your links like Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, and Instagram. They make you look like a real business in Google’s eyes and should never be skipped.

-Build Citations

Citations go hand in hand with your social media links. Again, these are just going to make you fit in with other trusted businesses online. Some citation examples include Yelp, Google my Business, Bing Places, and Apple Maps. Citations are particularly useful for Local SEO such as getting placed in the map packs.

-Use Keywords in Page Titles and URLs

It’s important to remember at all times that Google can only think like a machine. It’s easy for us humans to tell what a website is about with just a quick glance. For an algorithm, though, it has to pick up the topic through words. The most important words on a site are the words in the page title’s and URLs.

-Tag Media

Again, google is a machine! It can’t tell what a picture is about unless you give it a little help. This means always including relevant keywords in the titles and descriptions of your pictures, videos, and other media. Geotagging is also a good idea for local search.

-Use Proper Spelling and Grammar

Grammarly is your friend when it comes to ranking sites. Google can’t only gauge the quality of writing by the quality of the spelling and grammar. Content length is another big one. Make sure you have enough words on the pages you are trying to rank. (Kind of like all the text we’ve put at the bottom of this page here.)

-Build Great Content

This is probably the hardest thing to do right. Great content can’t be faked, but it will give you all those great things that Google likes to see. Great content gives you traffic, a lower bounce rate, and most importantly, LINKS POINTING TO YOUR SITE!

We hope these tips gave you some ideas on how to do better search engine optimization for your site!
